Cartoonist’s plans to publish ‘Georgian Heat magazine’

National newspaper cartoonist Adrian Teal has revealed plans to publish a new book which takes the form of an 18^th century tabloid newspaper.

Teal, whose work has featured in the Sunday Telegraph, the Sun and the Daily Mail, wants the fictional newspaper to capture the “truly scandalous stories of the era” in order to create a ‘Georgian Heat magazine”.

The Gin Lane Gazette, set between 1750 and 1800, will depict the bawdy habits of Georgian celebrities, including dukes and duchesses, through gossip columns, feature, sports, news reports, advertisements and a ‘courtesan of the month’.

Teal, who said he had spent the last three years reading nothing but Georgian history books, has submitted a pitch for his book on the crowd-funded publishing website Unbound,and is aiming to complete the project by October.

Unbound, founded by writers Dan Kieran, Justin Pollard and John Mitchinson, is a publishing website which allows authors to submit book proposals for readers to support financially.

Teal now has 27 days to gain 683 supporters – people who pledge to buy the book or else pay to be featured in the book as a caricature.

‘This period was the first great period of British journalism and caricature so it should prove interesting,’he told Press Gazette. ‘I’ve got 28 per cent of my supporters so far and things are looking hopeful.”
