A journalist has been reportedly shot dead while investigating illegal logging in Cambodia.
Taing Try, 49, was reportedly killed with a shot to the forehead at 1am on Sunday morning after he and five other journalists went to investigate reports of illegal logging in Kratie province.
The Cambodia Daily reports that the six journalists travelled in three cars to investigate a warehouse where they had heard ox-carts were taking luxury wood under cover of darkness.
Deputy director of Human Rights Watch Asia division Phil Robertson said: “This cold-blooded killing shows again just how dangerous Cambodia is for journalists, especially those who investigate wrongdoing about the country’s land and forests.”
The Cambodia Daily reports that there have been a number of threas in recent months directed at reporters covering illegal logging.
Two police officers and a soldier have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the killing. They were in a car which overturned whilst apparently trying to flee the scene of the murder.
