BBC director general warns of cash shortfall for public service broadcasting

By Patrick

BBC director-general Mark Thompson has issued a warning to the Government that the service will need more funding for public service broadcasting to survive in a digital age, in an interview with The Guardian.

According to the paper, which refers to 2007 as the BBC’s “annus horribilis”, he also said he corporation could play a pivotal role in “repairing the damaged relationship between media, public and politicians”.

Thompson promised to bring “proportionality” to news coverage of stories such as child abductions and to allow public figures the chance to “lay out their ideas” while reporters resist “the thrill of the political chase”. The Beeb’s local, regional and Westminster politics coverage would be increased, he said.
