The founding editor of the Independent, Andreas Whittam Smith, has paid tribute to columnist Miles Kington, who died last week of pancreatic cancer.
Kington – who joined the Independent from the Times in 1987 – was “the most civilised voice in the paper”, Whittam Smith says.
“I had read his column the previous morning. I didn’t know he had been ill. No one at the newspaper was aware. I never thanked Miles for his enormous contribution to the success of The Independent.”
