Independent media columnist Stephen Glover has poured cold water on Media Guardian’s story last Tuesday that former Observer editor Roger Alton was to edit the Independent.
He said: “I was preparing to pack up my stall” – until a later story said Alton was in talks to take over the job and quoted Alton himself describing the story as nonsense. Glover said he hasn’t the faintest idea what the truth is, but said: “It does seem rather rum to publish the first, unequivocal piece without any response from Mr Alton.”
Press Gazette did not follow the piece up because Alton described it to us as “complete bollocks” but he did add that he had been meeting with a lot of people.
