Al-Jazeera chief blasts Middle East governments for threatening press freedom

By Patrick

Wadar Khanfar, the director-general of al-Jazeera, has criticised a charter published by the Arab League of 22 nations last week as the most serious threat to medai freedom for years.

According to The Observer’s James Robinson, the charter calls on broadcasters to follow Muslim values and avoid insulting Arab leaders.

Incidentally, an Observer journalist posting a story online on a Tuesday would have been unheard of 14 months ago but it seems to have become a normal part of reporters’ working lives now.
