Prison officer arrested in Hartlepool by police investigating journalist payments

By William Turvill

A serving prison officer has been arrested today under Operation Elveden, the Met Police inquiry into payments made by journalists to public officials.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "Officers from Operation Elveden have this morning, Tuesday, 15 September, arrested a 45-year old man for misconduct in a public office (contrary to common law).

"The man, a serving prison officer, was arrested at an address in Hartlepool.

"He remains in custody at this time."

At least 29 public officials have been convicted under Operation Elveden, according to Press Gazette analysis, with many sent to prison.

Most of the arrests have followed the release of confidential emails sent between journalists and their sources by News International/News UK. Trinity Mirror is also believed to have passed on information identifying sources to the Met Police.
