Over at The Independent I hear there is some unease at the appointment of one Jamie Macintyre, who takes up his new slot this week as night reporter on the news desk.
“It’s not that we’ve got anything against Jamie personally,†one staffer grumbles down the phone, “but rather that he’s been given a staff job, while many others have been toiling away on the casual rota for years.â€
In addition, it hasn’t gone unnoticed that Jamie’s father is Don Macintyre, who is the paper’s Middle East correspondent.
Meanwhile, Macintyre has been spending the past few weeks getting to know the place working under Ian Burrell, the paper’s media editor.
The young whippersnapper, who gave up a job as a senior producer on the BBC’s Question Time has been telling friends that he knows his job at The Indy is a “step backwards in his career, but he has always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.â€
Axegrinder wonders whether Macintyre senior ever did night shifts though?
