The increasingly reclusive Keith Waterhouse was lured out of his Earl’s Court bunker in London this week for a seasonal lunch with some old colleagues from his days on the Daily Mirror.
But when the group, including ex-Mirror editor Mike Molloy, Anne Robinson’s soon-to-be ex-husband John Penrose, former People editor Bill Hagerty and retired columnist John Edwards, tried to book their normal watering hole, Langan’s Coq d’Or, they were told it was fully booked on the day.
Protesting that the booking was for the “great†Waterhouse, a regular who lived nearby and was not prepared to travel any further, a Langan’s flunkie replied: “Oh well, yes, Mr Waterhouse was in yesterday. But, no, we still don’t have any room.â€
The group, sulkingly, has now decided to make do with the Troubadour ‒ and it’s in Earl’s Court so it won’t be too far for Waterhouse to go.
