The largesse of Simon Kelner for those journalists departing from The Independent titles under the redundo scheme has backfired among some of the troops who remain.
It seems some hacks put in for a payoff only to be declined after a delay of several weeks when they were finally told by their editor that their services were still required.
One of the dwindling band of newsroom staffers confides: “People were planning to use the cash to get married or travel the world.
“But then they found out they weren’t getting the money after all and had to stay on. It’s all been very demoralising.”
