Topics: All horse sport, with a strong emphasis on British riders and horses. Our features brief is wide, but most of our readers are knowledgeable and compete so all submissions need to be pitched at the right level.
How to pitch: Send me a concise email outlining your idea with a working title, sell and an idea of the people you would interview for your piece.
Post-pitch: I get back to everyone who contacts me, but if you haven’t heard from me after a fortnight, send a follow-up email or give me a call. If an idea isn’t quite right for us, I’ll always explain why.
What will impress: An understanding of the title and our readership; topical features reacting to recent developments in the horseworld; features that could work on our website. I’m interested in features that lend themselves to graphic devices such as charts, side panels, maps, timelines and so on.
What won’t impress: Pitches without a clear angle and old ideas rehashed. I’m also looking for a good mix of case studies in any feature, so I won’t be impressed by ideas that focus on one individual. Long-winded emails aren’t a favourite either.
Rate: As a guide, £375 for 1,800 words.
Images: All ideas welcome, but we commission most of our own photography.
Any other info: It’s important that anyone contributing to the magazine has good equestrian knowledge, but that on its own isn’t enough — I’m looking for intelligent and capable writers with fresh ideas. And please don’t call on Mondays and Fridays, our press days.
