Host goes radio gaga over Deejay Oatesy

Move over Fatboy Slim, there is another superstar DJ hitting the airwaves… none other than veteran Sun news sub Graham Oates.

‘Deejay Oatesy”, as he now likes to be known, was the oldest swinger in town when he joined regular host Mike Howard on Starpoint Radio’s Superior Rhythms Show.

Never heard of it? Well, neither had we. But apparently Starpoint is an internet soul station broadcasting on Saturday nights from the middle of some godforsaken industrial site in south London.

Oates, whose previous DJ experience had been limited to spinning a few gramophone records at friends’ parties in Essex, modestly told colleagues before the show: ‘It’s not exactly Radio 1, but it is live, so anything that can go wrong probably will.”

Apparently, though, nothing did. In fact, Howard was so impressed with the patter of ‘Deejay Oatesy’– once famously spotted slumped over his pint in a Wapping hostelry with a life-size singing model of soul king James Brown on his knee – he has invited him back to do another show.
