Gavin’s goof and a tale of two Bernards

By Axegrinder axeblog

Newsnight anchor Gavin Esler is clearly pretty adept at passing the buck.

On the death of Bernard Manning, the multi-toothed Esler mistakenly referred to the controversial comic as “Bernard Matthews” ‒ famed for turkey twizzlers and a recent outbreak of bird flu at his farm.

After a clip of Manning was shown, a sheepish Esler said he had meant “of course” to refer to Manning “not, as the script said, Bernard Matthews”. He then dismissively shoved away the offending piece of paper in apparent disgust.

Surely, Esler isn’t trying to convince viewers that he’s just an “auto-cutie” who reads whatever is placed in front of him?
