A Dispatches documentary broadcast on Channel 4 and a series of reports by Sky News have been nominated for the International Emmy news and current affairs awards.
Sky News was nominated in the news category for its Pakistan – Terrors’ Front Line reports, from March last year, which detailed the increasing control the Taliban was taking in Pakistan.
Channel 4 Dispatches documentary Pakistan’s Taliban Generation, produced by October Films, was nominated for the current affairs award for its investigation on how the war on terror is creating a generation of child terrorists.
The October Films documentary faces competition for the prize from Hong Kong’s Tuesday Report: Child Abduction, produced by Television Broadcasts Limited, which looked into the plight of abductees from impoverished backgrounds.
Societe Radio-Canada’s Enquete: The Ultimate Forgiveness, which investigated the slaughter of children at an Amish school in the town of Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, in 2006, has also been nominated for the current affairs prize.
Argentina’s Artear-Canal 13 programme Telenoche: Glaciers, The First Veto, about president Cristina FernÃ¡ndez de Kirchner vetoing a law that had been approved unanimously by both chambers of senators and deputies, completes the nominees in the current affairs category.
In the news category, Sky faces competition from Qatar-based Al Jazeera English, which was nominated for its coverage of the Gaza Conflict.
Al Jazeera had teams on both sides of the border as war broke out in December, 2008, from where it reported for the duration of the 22-day battle.
Russia’s RT Channel and Brazil’s TV Globo were also nominated in the news category, respectively for extended news coverage of Obama’s Visit to Russia in July last year and Blackout in Brazil, when sixty-million Brazilians across 18 states were left without electricity on 10 November.
A total of eight nominees will compete for the two awards. The UK is the only country to have more than one nominee for prizes which will be presented at a gala ceremony in New York next month along with the American news and documentary prizes.
