As a show of support for the national campaign Fairtrade Fortnight, Yorkshire Post Newspapers put its money where its mouth is by stocking Fairtrade products in its Leeds headquarters’ restaurant and vending machines.
The initiative is a means of helping some of the poorest countries by selling goods which guarantee producers in the developing world decent working conditions.
YPN claims to be the first regional newspaper group to stock Fairtrade goods for its staff. The group also spent Fairtrade Fortnight highlighting Fairtrade issues in its newspapers.
NUJ father of chapel at the Yorkshire Evening Post, Peter Lazenby, who put the Fairtrade proposal to management, said: "Many trade union branches have committed themselves to supporting and promoting Fairtrade. We believe YPN is the first regional newspaper group to do so and we hope many more will follow suit."
