Press Freedom Day on 3 May will be marked by a conference in London
bringing together murdered journalists’ families and colleagues.
The
conference, organised by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) and
the Open Society Foundation, will be held at the Frontline Club in
Paddington.
It will also feature a panel of media experts who will discuss ways to combat the problem of journalists’
killers evading justice.
WAN
estimates that more than 500 journalists have been murdered in the past
decade and in eight cases out of every ten the killers walk free.
The
conference will feature testimony from Myroslava Gongadze, widow of
journalist Gyorsy Gongadze murdered in Ukraine; Saira Shah, the
reporter and colleague of murdered journalist James Miller; Tipu
Sultan, a news reporter who survived a murder attempt in Bangladesh;
and Alagi Yorro Jallow, managing editor of The Independent in Gambia,
who will speak about his murdered colleague Deyda Hydara.
