World champions in the driving seat

By Press Gazette

Former world champions Nigel Mansell and Carl Fogarty are launching a new motoring title called Planet Driving.

The 140-page glossy will be published by Media 5-1, a new company set up by publisher Ian White. Mansell and Fogarty are shareholders and are on board as joint editors-in-chief.

The launch comes four months after F1 business tycoon Bernie Ecclestone axed his Formula One magazine.

Planet Driving is to focus on the enjoyment of driving as opposed to cars themselves – featuring on and off-road driving, riding and competitions as well as news and features on marine, flying and recreational craft.

The first issue contains a piece on what it feels like to be part of Formula One as well as an interview with world powerboat champion Steve Curtis.

Richard Hill, former editor of Italian Bike magazine is editor. He is hoping for monthly sales of 50,000.

Hill has hired a team of freelances including road editor Michele Newman, off-road editor Keith Oswin, track editor Tony Dodgins, motorcycle editor Ian Kerr and Laura Kerr as marine editor. Mark Wagner, chief photographer on Flight International is writing about aviation. Mail on Sunday freelance Russell Bray is also on board as a contributor.

The launch coincides with Dennis Publishing’s latest venture “Project Squirrel” – also believed to be a motoring title.
