Patrick Wintour has been named as the Guardian’s new political editor, taking over from Michael White who has been made assistant editor.

Wintour has been chief political correspondent of The Guardian since 1999 and was previously political editor of The Observer. Prior to that he was a reporter at The Guardian.

White was Guardian political editor for 16 years. In his new role he will continue to be based at Westminster and write for the paper and website.

Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said: “Patrick’s one of the most experienced and admired political correspondents of his generation. He’s a

great story-getter and is widely trusted both for his range of contacts and his extraordinarily good judgement. “

Wintour said: “It’s a privilege, and very daunting, to follow as respected and admired a political editor as Michael. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity.”

Wintour’s father, Charles, is former editor of the Evening Standard and Press Gazette. His sister Anna is editor US Vogue.
