Glossy design and fashion magazine Wallpaper picked up a hat-trick of awards at last night’s Press Gazette Magazine Design and Journalism Awards.
The IPC-owned title shook off competition from Grazia, The Sunday Times Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar to be named best-designed circulation magazine of the year (over 40,000 circulation). It then went on to be crowned the overall best-designed title of the year.
‘Wallpaper continues to innovate. A perfect response to its subject matter,’one judge said.
Another added: ‘Page after page of just stunning design. The most restrained, considered magazine in this category. A triumph.”
The award for young designer of the year went to Dominic Bell at Wallpaper, whose entry was described by judges as a ‘really strong and convincing piece of editorial design”.
Elle, The Sunday Times Magazine, Onelife and Ritz left the ceremony at the London Marriott Hotel with two awards apiece.
Hachette-Filipacchi women’s monthly Elle won the award for best redesign and best-designed front cover.
Sunday Times Magazine won two journalism awards for feature writer Ariel Leve and interviewer Lesley White.
Time Out’s Michael Hodges was named columnist of the year for his ‘funny, insightful and poignant’take on London life, and editor of the year went to David Burton at Camouflage, the customer title about which aids recruitment for the army.
Jonathan Green won exclusive of the year for his Live magazine feature on the ‘dirty secret of the NHS”, which was praised by judges for its ‘painstaking research”.
The awards, now in their 10th year, were presented last night by TV personality and BBC sports presenter Clare Balding.
