An appeal by the Wakefield Express to buy a new scanner to help combat breast cancer has topped its £160,000 target.
This week the newspaper also revealed that hospital chiefs have added an extra £46,000 to the fund so a specialist breast care unit can be built at the local Clayton Hospital to house the new scanner.
The target was reached this week after a local 72-year-old woman left £20,000 to the appeal in her will after dying of breast cancer.
Wakefield Express acting editor Mark Bradley said: “When we launched the Breast Cancer Appeal in January last year, we knew the target we set the community was ambitious. But we have been astounded by the response from our readers.
“The most pleasing aspect of the appeal has been where the money has come from. “Nearly all the cash has been given straight from the kind hearts and deep pockets of the public, and we are just grateful that there is such community spirit in the city to bring about this kind of achievement.”
Work is expected to begin on the unit at the end of October and it should open in mid-January
