Gordon brought Zeynab with him to the UK
An injured Iraqi child, flown out of the country by a freelance journalist, is to receive medical treatment from one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the UK, writes Dominic Ponsford.
Reporter Lee Gordon took 11-year-old amputee Zeynab Hamid Taresh back with him to the UK when he returned after more than a year reporting in Iraq. The girl lost her leg when a coalition bomb fell on her village.
Zeynab has been “adopted” by Heather Mills McCartney, the former model, who herself lost part of a leg in a road accident. Mills McCartney has arranged for Zeynab to be fitted with a replacement limb by a company called Dorset Orthopaedic and for her to be treated by surgeon Robert Marston.
Gordon said: “Heather and I are going to be talking about setting up some sort of clinic in Iraq for the other amputee children. She’s really taken Zeynab under her wing and thrown herself into the campaign to get something done for kids in Iraq.”
He said Zeynab should be fitted with an artificial leg by the end of this month.
