15. British journalism’s greatest ever scoops: Tory Boss Archer pays off vice girl (News of the World, 1986)

The NoW caught Conservative Party deputy chairman Jeffrey Archer red-handed paying off prostitute Monica Coghlan via a middleman who offered her an enveloped “crammed with £50 notes”.

The Daily Star, which also covered the Coghlan story, was successfully sued by Archer in 1987 for £500,000.
