39. British journalism’s greatest ever scoops: Northern Rock (BBC, Robert Peston, 2007)

In what was to prove the start of a series of scoops for Peston as the credit crunch began to bite, the BBC’s business editor revealed Northern Rock’s request to the Government for emergency funding.

The scoop helped fuel a run on the bank, at the time the UK’s fifth biggest lender, and savers queued outside its branches.
