26. British journalism’s greatest ever scoops: Murderers (The Daily Mail, 1998)

Still the story Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre says he is most proud of.

Stephen Lawrence was murdered in a racist gang attack in 1993.  Despite the collapse of two criminal trials, the Mail boldly challenged the five accused of his murder to sue if they disputed the newspaper’s headline of “Murderers”.

None of the five took up the challenge but to date no-one has been convicted of Lawrence’s killing.
