Surfing travel magazine The Surfers Path is to become more environmentally friendly and is changing its paper to 100 per cent recycled.
The move, to be implemented next year by independent publisher Permanent Publishing, will include using non-genetically modified soybased inks. Drew Kampion, who has just joined the title as associate editor, said green issues were “at the heart” of the magazine’s ethos.
“The survival of our surf spots is directly linked to the health of our rivers and streams. The wholesale clearing of forest ecosystems, along with the treatment of wood pulp with toxic chemicals like chlorine bleach in the manufacture of paper, link directly to many of the water-quality problems being addressed by the Surfrider Foundation. Given the condition of the planet, surfers above all should be sensitive to the very large realities behind these issues,” he said.
Publisher Jim Peskett said the production quality was of a similar high standard before. “We could hardly see the difference when we compared pages side by side,” he added.
The new-look issue is due out on news-stands on 1 December. It coincides with the launch of a US edition.
