Compulsory redundancies and editorial cutbacks have prompted the revival of The Sun’s NUJ chapel after a 20-year-break.
At a meeting today in Wapping around 30
journalists met to elect chapel officers. The NUJ believes it now has
about 50 members in total at The Sun.

Earlier this month management revealed that 20
journalists were being made redundant, shift patterns were being
changed and benefits scrapped as part of a cost-cutting drive.
Consultation was promised with News International Staff Association but
according to the NUJ many staff are unhappy with this. NISA has not
returned calls from Press Gazette.

The NUJ has not had a presence at The Sun since

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “This is
a great step and we are very proud of the staff at The Sun who were
determined to get their union back. We never turned the lights off when
we left Wapping and now we are determined they are going to burn
brighter than ever.”

NUJ Newspaper Organiser Barry Fitzpatrick said:
