The Llanelli Star is urging readers to engage in a letter-writing campaign in a bid to save the town’s 24-hour accident and emergency service – and has even written the letters for them.
The Northcliffe Newspapers weekly has so far printed four cut-out protest letters addressed to key health service decision makers, including Welsh Assembly health minister Jane Hutt.
Editor Andy Pearson said: “It’s essential that we fight for the community on major issues such as this – and important that we’re seen to be thinking creatively about how we fight.
“All our readers have to do is address and sign the letters, cut them out, pop them in an envelope and mail them.
Loss of A&E means loss of life. For 80p every one of our readers can save lives.”
The Star broke the A&E threat story on 31 July and ran five pages on the issue last week.
The newspaper is also organising a petition but, due to the issue’s tight timescale, was keen to encourage protest letters as quickly as possible.
