Southampton FC’s ban on photographers: the story so far…

Southampton Football Club took the decision last week to bar photographers from its St Mary’s Stadium and instead sell images – taken by its own in-house team – to the media.

The club’s decision – and a subsequent statement saying it was sticking to its guns – has drawn widespread condemnation across the news industry.

The ramifications could potentially be damaging for press photographers and news outlets alike should other clubs follow suit.
