RTE in court

By Press Gazette

RTE is resisting an attempt by the Police Service in Northern Ireland to gain access to film of disturbances in Belfast on the evening of July 12.

Serious disorder broke out following an Orange Order march past a flashpoint area in Ardoyne, with British soldiers called during clashes.

The police application is being contested by the Irish national broadcaster in Belfast County Court. A lawyer for the station argued that journalistic impartiality was of central importance and that if the application was granted, camera crews’ safety could be compromised in future. Judgment in the case has been reserved.
