Readers of Newcastle daily newspaper The Evening Chronicle have donated more than £20,000 to help refugees in Sudan.
The paper teamed up with UNICEF to launch an appeal for people in the crisis-hit Darfur region of the country.
Editor Paul Robertson said: “Like everyone else, we couldn’t help but be moved by the disturbing images and stories that have been coming out of Darfur.
“Every time we launch an appeal for help, our readers always respond. We never cease to be amazed at how generous they are, and this time it is no different.”
