The World Association of Newspapers and the World Editors Forum have protested to the President of Iran against the arrest of two journalists and the closure of two newspapers – one of which was closed for reprinting a US newspaper cartoon that the Iranian Religious Court considered insulting to the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
In a letter to President Mohammad Khatami, the Paris-based WAN and the WEF noted that Iran was holding 10 journalists in prison. They asked the President to release the journalists, allow the newspapers to reopen, and to ensure the country fully respects international standards of free expression.
