Post to pay for Secombe plaque

By Press Gazette

The South Wales Evening Post backing for a campaign for a suitable memorial for Swansea-born entertainer Harry Secombe resulted in a deal for a plaque just 48 hours after the newspaper stepped in.

Sir Harry died two years ago and there had been public outcry in Swansea over the lack of a suitable memorial in the city for one of its most famous sons.

After the Post’s intervention, a plaque in his memory will be put outside the council house where he was born in 1921 in the St. Thomas area.

Post features writer Abigail Hart got in touch with the Heritage Foundation responsible for putting up landmark blue signs on the homes of the famous. The Foundation readily agreed to put up a Secombe plaque this summer -paid for by the Post.

The Post acted after a plaque for Sir Harry was erected outside the Opera House in Manchester. When the Post reported the event last week, it was inundated with complaints that nothing had been done in Swansea.

Sir Harry’s family are delighted and the plaque is expected to be unveiled in July.
