The Yorkshire Evening Post has won the Johnston Press Daily Newspaper of the Year award for the second year running.
The judges said the journalists “work hard digging out hugely interesting stories, making it a first-class evening newspaper”. A campaign exposing the work of the British National Party was singled out for praise.
The Weekly Newspaper of the Year award went to the Hemel Gazette.
Edited by David Feldstein, the judges said it was packed with “cracking news stories” that were “excellently presented” and with “strong inside news pages”.
The Milton Keynes Citizen was Free Newspaper of the Year and The Gazette, Blackpool, received the daily sales award, having recorded a 0.2 per cent increase over the previous year in the January to June ABCs. The weekly sales winner was the Mansfield Chad series with an increase of 12 per cent.
Trainee journalist of the year was Catherine Burt, from The News, Portsmouth, for a portfolio that included an interview with the parents of a Marine who had been killed in a “friendly fire” incident.
Other winners were: best editorial content on a website – Eastbourne Today; best in-paper promotion – The News, Portsmouth; best front page (daily) – Peterborough Evening Telegraph; best front page (weekly) – Leamington Courier; best single copy sales initiative – Wigan Evening Post; best editorial idea – Wakefield Express; most innovative promotional campaign – Yorkshire Post; best outside event – Epworth Bells and Crowle Advertiser; best home delivery sales campaign – The News, Portsmouth.
