Observer confirms 8 January Berliner relaunch

By Press Gazette

The Observer has confirmed plans to follow the Guardian and relaunch in Berliner format on 8 January.

The
relaunch of The Observer, which is the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper,
will also make it the UK’s only full-colour national Sunday title.

Guardian
Newspapers chief executive Carolyn McCall said: “The Berliner format
has already proved a huge success with the Guardian’s readers and
advertisers, uniquely combining ease of reading with editorial
integrity, and we have every confidence it will prove a long-term
winner for The Observer as well.”

Editor Roger Alton said:
“Sundays have changed dramatically over recent years and the Berliner
Observer will be the most modern, punchy, engaging Sunday paper, with
more variety for the reader, more interactivity with our audience,
fantastic use of pictures, a

brilliant stable of writers, and the best array of magazines in the market.”

According
to the Observer all areas of the paper have been redesigned “providing
easier navigation through its sections and magazines”.

Other
changes include: combining the Business & Media section with Cash
and the introduction of a new half-Berliner size newsprint TV listings
guide, Television. Other additions include a new monthly magazine,
Observer Woman and Armando Iannucci who has been signed up as a
columnist and will also contribute articles across the paper.
