Northcliffe cull of senior journalists claims another victim

By Press Gazette

Northcliffe’s cull of senior editor staff continued this week as
Bristol Evening Post deputy editor Stan Szecowka was told to clear his
desk.
The move comes just two weeks after Bristol
Evening Post editor Mike Lowe was given his marching orders.
Bath Chronicle editor of ten years standing David Gledhill has also
gone in the last fortnight as has long-serving Western Morning News
editor Barrie Williams.
It is understood that all three editors were resistant to cost-cutting plans at the regional newspaper giant.
Northcliffe revealed last week that it plans to cut costs by £20 million a year at its regional titles.
Szecowka was given 10 minutes to clear his desk
by new Evening Post editor-in-chief Mike Norton on Monday and left to a
spontaneous round of applause from journalists in the newsroom.
He had spent nearly five years at the Bristol
Evening Post as deputy to Lowe who was replaced by Norton last month
after nine years as editor.
Szecowka has worked for four other Northcliffe
titles, the Lincolnshire Echo, Derby Evening Telegraph, Hull Daily Mail
and The Citizen, Gloucester.
He began his career with the Oxford Journal Group and also worked for
the Milton Keynes Mirror and Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph.
There is speculation within Northcliffe that
Steve Hall, editor of the company’s Expressand Echo in Exeter, is in
the running to succeed Norton as the new editor of the Derby Evening
Telegraph.
