The BBC has appointed a new head of programme legal advice, following the announcement that incumbent Glenn Del Medico will retire in August after 38 years.
Valerie Nazareth, currently a senior lawyer in the BBC’s Programme Legal Advice department, will assume the role. Nazareth joined the BBC solicitor’s department in 1990. She has worked in the programme legal advice department since it was established in 1991, with time spent on attachment in the editorial policy and litigation departments.
Announcing the appointment, BBC general counsel Nicholas Eldred, said she was “rightly highly regarded by programme-makers and journalists across the BBC”.
He added: “She takes over a strong and much respected department, built up since its inception by the outstanding work of Glenn Del Medico.”
Last December, at the Press Gazette/Newspaper Society Law For Journalists Conference Del Medico revealed that undercover journalist Mark Daly’s cover was blown after a pilot copy of BBC documentary The Secret Policeman was leaked to the police.
