New Orkney title hits the islands

By Press Gazette

The launch of Orkney’s new weekly newspaper, Orkney Today, marks the third newspaper to be set up in Scotland’s largest island groups within the last three years.

However, despite the new arrivals, the signs are that all three established weeklies – the Stornoway Gazette, in the Western Isles, the Shetland Times and The Orcadian – are holding their own in circulation and advertising terms.

Orkney Today was launched with a reception in Kirkwall Town Hall attended by more than 300 guests, including local celebrity Cameron Stout of Big Brother fame. Initial sales were at least 8,000 from a print run of 10,000, after the newspaper hit the street 45 minutes late because the ferry from Caithness was delayed by bad weather.

The paper has been founded by local photographer Ken Amer, and is backed by a local fuel business.
