The NCTJ’s photojournalism board has invited Steve Phillips, picture editor at the South Wales Evening Post, to become its sixth member.

The board meets every year in May and November to moderate and examine the work of trainee press photographers and photojournalists taking the NCTJ courses at Norton College in Sheffield.

Phillips said: “The standard of work is very high. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to give something back to the industry.”

Phillips’ career began at the Merthyr Express in 1987, before training as a junior press photographer at the South Wales Evening Post.

Since then he has worked as senior photographer and deputy picture editor for the South Wales Echo in Cardiff before becoming the chief photographer at rival paper the South Wales Argus in Newport.

Phillips returned to the South Wales Evening Post to take up the position of picture editor 12 years after leaving.
