New chief named for RTE Radio 1

By Press Gazette

By Des Cryan in Dublin

Radio producer Eithne Hand has been named the new head of Ireland’s RTE Radio 1.

She has been with the station since 1985 when she joined as a researcher in religion programmes, later moving to young people’s programmes as a presenter.

She left RTE for a short period in the Nineties for Century Radio, returning to RTE when the new independent station folded.

She became a radio producer and for nine years up to 2001 worked on a number of major Radio 1 programmes, notably the Gay Byrne Radio Show and Today with Pat Kenny. She then moved from mass-audience, light entertainment and current affairs programmes to drama and documentary programmes where she made a particularly strong mark.
