New boy’ becomes Sunday Mirror deputy

By Press Gazette

Former showbiz reporter James Scott has been promoted to deputy editor at the Sunday Mirror after just six months as news editor.

He fills a post which fell vacant after Richard Wallace was made editor of the Daily Mirror in June.

Scott, 31, started his career at Bristol agency South West News in 1995 and spent three years there before moving to The Sun where he stayed for a year as a reporter.

From 1999-2002 he was a showbiz reporter on the Mirror and then went to The People as deputy news editor for 18 months. He was made Sunday Mirror news editor in February of this year.

In recent months the Sunday Mirror has turned around its declining circulation, partly with the help of free CD promotions. In August the paper sold 1,659,072 copies, up 0.9 per cent yearonyear and 5.7 per cent month-onmonth.

Editor Tina Weaver, who returned from several months away on maternity leave in June, said: “Since my return I have been delighted with the team spirit on the Sunday Mirror and the tremendous effort everyone has been making.

“We have produced some of our best papers of late and sales are reflecting our achievements, recently enjoying a year-on-year increase. With the new appointments today I’m confident we can only add to that success.”

Trinity Mirror has also announced the promotion of Mike Small to executive editor. He joined the paper in 2001 with Tina Weaver and was associate editor.

Assistant editor Nick Buckley has been promoted to associate editor (news) and is to work with sports editor Craig Tregurtha on developing the sports coverage.

Assistant features editor Jill Main has been promoted to features editor, replacing Nicky Dawson who has been promoted to assistant editor (features).
