New boss appointed at Scotsman

By Press Gazette

By Hamish Mackay

Johnston Press has appointed Michael Johnston as managing director of its latest acquisition – The Scotsman Publications Ltd (TSPL).

Johnston, who immediately replaced Stephen Walker after the £160m deal was formalised last week, has worked for Johnston Press for eight years.

He has recently been running its stable of titles on the south coast of England as the company¹s divisional managing director (South).

Michael Johnston is the son of former Johnston Press chief executive Freddy, who led the family company to a stock market flotation in 1988.

Tim Bowdler, chief executive of Johnston Press, explained that although he held Walker in “high regard”, he preferred to entrust the management of its new acquisition to one of the company’s own men.

He said: “Michael has done a very good job for us on our titles in the south of England.”
