The Evening Press in York unveiled its new tabloid look this week, writes Sarah Lagan.
It is one of the last evening broadsheets to adopt a compact format, leaving only The Halifax Evening Courier, the Middlesbrough-based Evening Gazette and The Belfast Telegraph in the bigger size. The Evening Gazette is planning to go tabloid from Monday 27 September.
The new look Evening Press, which went on sale on Monday, is responding to the success of its Saturday edition, which switched to a tabloid size in 1997.
Editor Kevin Booth said the move to turn the whole product to a tabloid format was the most important development in the paper’s 122-year history. It will be more colourful with a new design, but Booth promised that it will retain its editorial integrity and quality.
He said: “Sales of The Evening Press are extremely healthy.
“However, we cannot become complacent.
Newspapers must continue to evolve to remain relevant and appealing.
“Two of the top quality national newspapers, The Times and The Independent, have demonstrated perfectly that the change to compact can be achieved without affecting the service to readers and advertisers and that there is no loss of quality.”
Celebrations to mark the change included York’s town crier taking to the streets and proclaiming the change.
