The Daily Mirror has scrapped the post of Ireland editor, with the departure this week of Craig Mackenzie.
The 55-year-old joined The Mirror in 1996 as assistant editor and quickly moved over to executive editor with responsibility for Ireland. In 1998 he became editor in chief of Ireland and has overseen a period of growth in Irish sales of the paper. Mackenzie has previously worked for The Sun and The News of the World, and was deputy editor of The Daily Express.
Greg Harkin has been made editor of the Ulster edition with effect from 17 September. Trinity Mirror said the Belfast and Ulster editions will now have less autonomy and be managed directly by editor Richard Wallace and managing director Ellis Watson at Canary Wharf.
