Media praised by judge and baby’s parents

By Press Gazette

The media has been praised for the way it covered the case of the parents from Portsmouth who sought to block plans by doctors not to resuscitate their critically-ill baby daughter ( Press Gazette , 1 October).

Before the Family Division case was heard in the High Court a hearing took place in which Mr Justice Hedley ruled that the case should be heard in open court.

The judge imposed restrictions on certain aspects of reporting.

When he gave his judgment on Thursday last week, he made it clear that he was impressed with the way the media had covered the case.

After giving his ruling on the fate of 11month-old baby Charlotte Wyatt Mr Justice Hedley said: “I have been greatly encouraged by the way this case has been reported.

“It might well be that it is an important factor in the way these cases will be treated in the future.”

Lawyers for Charlotte’s parents Darren and Debbie also made a point of thanking the media for the support and sensitive coverage that had been given.
