Ian Mean, new editor of The Citizen, Gloucester, has made a raft of appointments – including three new posts – as he restructures the newspaper.
There will be a new business update supplement from February and a daily business page within the next three months.
Matt Holmes
News editor Matt Holmes becomes head of content and number three on the paper behind deputy editor Bev Ward. Mean told staff Holmes was getting the job for “having motivated an inexperienced newsroom into an enthusiastic set of reporters”.
Holmes will also be in charge of all editorial planning and is already working with Mean on the 2003 plan.
Chief sub-editor Tony Marcovecchio has been made overnight editor. Mean said his experience and his coaching of younger members of the production team had given a newly structured design team “a very solid base”. Marcovecchio’s knowledge of sport will be used to assist Darren Powell, who steps up from deputy chief sub-editor to the new post of head of design (news and sport) to help the sports desk create new design templates for their pages.
Bev Hawes
Mean said: “It reflects my vision that the paper needs to have a strong design synergy throughout its pages. Darren has shown brilliant design skills and been a very able pupil of Tony Marcovecchio. Tony and Darren will work very closely in developing the design team.” Bev Hawes, currently Western Daily Press chief reporter for Gloucestershire, is to join The Citizen as associate news editor – another new position.
Mean believes Hawes’ experience of the county will be a big asset to the newsroom. “He will be involved in helping to run the newsdesk but his initial priorities will be to edit the business supplement and the new business update supplement, which will be produced in Gloucester from February. He will also oversee the setting-up of the daily business page within the next three months.”
Darren Powell
Deputy news editor John Sykes moves up to news editor, responsible for the daily news schedule and managing all reporters.
Phil Norris, senior reporter and education correspondent, becomes deputy news editor.
Sub-editor Mark Salter has been made joint assistant chief sub-editor, joining Paula Smith.
Victoria Temple has the new title of chief feature writer.
