CharlesMcGhee, editor of the Evening Times, Glasgow, has been nominated as the next president of the Society of Editors.
The appointment is subject to confirmation at the society’s annual meeting during its conference at Windermere on 17 October.
McGhee,
who took over the editorship of the Evening Times in August 1999, has
been unanimously nominated by the board of the SoE.
He moved to the Evening Times from the Sunday Herald, where he spent a year as consultant editor, helping with the launch.
He
has also held the posts of deputy editor of the Daily Record and Sunday
Mail, as well as senior editorial executive roles on Scotland on
Sunday, Sunday Times Scotland and Today newspaper.
He is a member
of the Press Complaints Commission. The Evening Times was named
Newspaper of the Year in the Scottish Press Awards 2005 and UK Evening
Newspaper of the Year in the Press Gazette Regional Press Awards 2005.
McGhee
said: “I am delighted to be nominated as the first Scottish president
for the society. The SoE plays a crucial role on behalf of all sectors
of the media.”
David Gledhill was due to take over as president, but lost his job as editor of the Bath Chronicle in the summer.
