Condé Nast Traveller will join the fundraising effort for the tsunami victims in its next edition, after two of the magazine’s contributors were caught up in the disaster while holidaying in Sri Lanka.
The two photographers were missing for two days before they sent messages home that they were safe.
Editor Sarah Miller said the magazine would take a “considered, long term” approach to covering the events.
“In the future, we are going to have the responsibility of encouraging people to go back to those beautiful places, but for now my personal opinion on Sri Lanka at least is that they need the airport for aid planes, not tourists.”
She said the magazine was organising a fundraising dinner at London’s Four Seasons Hotel, with Michael Palin as a guest speaker.
John Welsh, editor of the weekly Travel Trade Gazette , said the paper would attempt to give the travel industry the chance to “tell its story to itself” in coming issues.
He said: “The best role we can take is to encourage tourists back to these countries once the health and safety issues have been resolved.”
? Media companies have rushed to support an advertising auction to boost fundraising for tsunami victims.
Airtime and ad space worth nearly £600,000 has been pledged for the auction, which is being run by MediaWeek.
The auction will open online at noon on Friday 7 January on Media Week’s website (www.mediaweek.co.uk)
