South Wales weekly newspaper the Llanelli Star has collected over six tons of educational and medical supplies which have been flown out to Tanzania.
For the paper’s Aid into Africa initiative, which began six months ago, readers rallied around to help and donate goods at various collection points.
The project culminated in a 16-page supplement with photos of Tanzanian schoolchildren and interviews with a politician tipped to be the country’s next president, as well as teachers and aid workers.
The initiative by the 16,500-circulation Northcliffe title was carried out in conjunction with charity Aid into Africa run by reader Alan Cable, of Burry Port.
Two of the Star’s reporters, Greg Jones and Terry Morris, delivered the supplies to Africa. Jones said: “It only took one phone call from Alan to alert us to the possibilities. We created a New Year appeal for aid supplies which was brilliantly supported by readers and local businesses.”
Morris added: “It was immensely satisfying to see the books and toys collected in Llanelli going to very worthy homes.”
