The Ipswich Evening Star’s “Cap the Tax” campaign has won praise from Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy, who described it as “regional journalism at its best”, writes Dominic Ponsford.
The newspaper has appealed for suggestions from readers on what should happen to council tax as the local government budget process begins.
The campaign was prompted by concern over an 18.5 per cent council tax increase imposed by Suffolk County Council in April.
So far, 300 Evening Star readers have returned coupons printed in the paper and many favour the Liberal Democrat policy of replacing council tax with a locally managed income tax.
The paper’s political editor, Paul Geater, interviewed Kennedy at the House of Commons and showed him cuttings from the Evening Star campaign.
Kennedy said: “This is regional journalism at its best – highlighting an issue that affects your readers and keeping the pressure up.”
