Journalists and media lawyers will have a chance to quiz the
Director of Public Prosecutions Ken MacDonald QC at this year’s Press
Gazette/Newspaper Society Law for Journalists Conference.
This year’s other keynote speaker is director of the pressure group Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti.
The
event, now in its fourth year, takes place at the Royal Society of the
Arts on the Strand in central London, and aims to provide all those
involved in media law with a comprehensive update on developments.
Topics
covered on Friday, December 2, include defamation, court reporting,
website liability, confidence and privacy claims, freedom of
information, reporting terrorism and the proposed new antiterror
legislation.
Other speakers include Trinity Mirror head of
editorial legal Marcus Partington, who will reveal his extensive
personal experience of the cost to publishers of people suing them
under “no win, no fee” rules.
And lawyer Caroline Keane, from
Wiggin & Co, will answer the question: “Just how deep can reporters
dig into the private lives of the rich, the famous, the notorious and
the person in the street?”
